Sales Volume of Pork in the World Increased

In 2011, according to BusinesStat estimates, sales volume of pork in the world amounted to 108 million tons, having increased by 10 % compared to 2007. In 2012-2016, following the rising demand the sales volume of pork in the world will increase by 2-3 % annually.

In 2011, the production volume of pork in the world amounted to 112 million tons. China and the USA are the world leaders in the pork production.

The domestic production of pork in most of the countries almost absolutely meets demand for pork. In 2007-2011, the trade of the imported produce in the world accounted for 11 % on average.

Belarus is the Biggest Importer of Pork into Russia

For the past five years retail sales of pork in Russia have been showing a positive growth dynamics. During the period from 2006 to 2010 the sales volume increased from 535.3 thousand tons to 731.6 thousand tons. According to BusinesStat, in 2011 the volume of retail sales of pork will rise to 746.7 thousand tons.

Along with the retailing, the volume of pork supply to the public catering and industrial processing will grow in 2011 as well. In 2010 the industry used 1,607 thousand tons of pork for manufacture of meat products instead of 1,528 thousand tons in 2009. Restaurants and cafes purchased 88 thousand tons of pork for cooking instead of 86 thousand tons in 2009.

Simultaneously with the growth of the commercial trade of pork, the private sector is decreasing production of pork for internal consumption. While in 2010 private households consumed 701 thousand tons of self-produced pork, in 2011 the volume of self-production will drop to 696 thousand tons.

Private households produce an amount of pork comparable to that of agricultural enterprises. While private households manufacture 700 thousand tons of pork, agricultural farms produce about 1,460 thousand tons of the same type of meat.

The Russian meat processing industry remains highly dependent on the imported raw materials. In 2010 Russian agricultural enterprises manufactured 1,459.6 thousand tons of pork with the import volume of 813.7 thousand tons. Over a half of the imported pork was delivered from Brazil and Germany. Brazil supplied 217.5 thousand tons of frozen pork, and Germany exported 106.9 thousand tons to Russia. Belarus is the biggest supplier of pork to Russia of the CIS countries. In 2010 it brought in about 30 thousand tons of pork. Part of it is imported chilled.
