The Sales Volume of Potato in the World is Expected to Increase

In 2006-2010, world potato croppage went up by almost 9%: from 306 to 333 million tons. The largest world annual increase in potato croppage, compared to the previous years, was recorded in 2007, it was more than 5%. In 2010, the market showed the most insignificant world annual increase in potato croppage, it equaled less than 1%. In 2006-2010, the largest volume of potato production was registered in China. The share of China of the total volume of potato croppage in the world fluctuated between 18% in 2006 and 21% in 2010. Although, China is the top manufacturer of potato, the production volume of potato per capita is not large.

In 2006-2010, the sales volume of potato in the world went up by 6%: from 288 million tons to 305 million tons. In 2010, every fifth purchase of potato was made in China (almost 64 million tons). Almost 11% of all the world potato production was sold in India and about 9% in Russia.  According to BusinesStat estimates, in 2011-2015, the sales volume of potato in the world is expected to increase on the average by 1.3% per annum. In 2015, the sales volume of potato in the world will amount to 326 million tons.

The upsurge in the sales volume of potato in the world is stipulated by several factors. Firstly, the potato production is rapidly growing in the third world countries and has great potential for further output and consumption growth amid the steadily increasing population size. Secondly, potato is the main source of energy for most of the poor. Potato yield of the relatively small territory and in short time is higher than yield of any other agricultural crop. Thirdly, apart from carbohydrates, potato contains the biggest amount of proteins, comparably to the other root crops. Potato is high in vitamin C crop, and contains only 1% of fat.
