Sales of Preserved Food Will Be Rising

The sales of preserved food went up from 2.9 million tons in 2009 to 3.0 million tons in 2010. From 2011 the sales of preserved food will be rising, and by 2015 the sales volume will have reached 3.4 million tons.

In 2010, preserved vegetables accounted for 35% of the total sales volume of preserved food, canned fruits and berries accounted for 34.5%, and preserved milk accounted for 12%. The shares of preserved meat, fish and seafood were significantly smaller.

Canned fruits and berries present the biggest segment of the Russian preserved food market. The size of canned fruit and berry market increases annually. The growth of the canned fruit and berry market will take place due to the expansion of the retail assortment, but not due to the expansion of consumption of traditional preserved food.

Preserved and semipreserved fish anв seafood account for the smallest share of the market size.  Preserved fish and fish products used to be limited-line food products in the USSR. Due to the economy development the food product range in the country expanded, and the share of preserved fish began to decrease.

According to BusinesStat estimates, the retail sales of preserved vegetables and canned fruit and berries will go up, and the sales of preserved meat, milk and fish will decrease.
