Functional Food Products Are More Expensive Than Simple Analogues
In 2007-2008, the sales of functional food increased by more than 8 % per annum, i.e. in 2006 the functional food market amounted to 581 thousand tons, and in 2008 its volume reached 668 thousand tons. In 2009, the actual sales volume of functional food went down by 11.5 %. Functional food products are more expensive than simple analogues, and amid the crisis the consumers had to stop buying them.
In 2010, the market volume reached 584 thousand tons. In volume terms cultured milk products account for the major share of the sales volume, bread and flour products rank second and the third position is occupied by cereals and flakes.
Functional cultured milk products in Russia account for 49 % of the total sales volume of cultured milk products (1.4 million tons per annum). The total consumption volume of bread and flour products in Russia equals more than 7 million tons per annum, 6.5 % out of which account for functional breads.
