Russian TV Set Market Recovering from the Crisis
The total number of TV sets in Russian households increased from 77 million items in 2006 to 88 million items in 2010. The constant growth of the number of TV sets in use is accounted for by the broadening of the range of household appliances in the country as well as in the world. Nowadays, several appliances can be simultaneously used in one household. Besides, the service life of domestic appliances decreases due to the fast technological progress, which leads to both, their higher affordability for broader layers of the population, and a high speed of obsolescence of appliances. Release of new generation TV sets (such as the ones with the 3D technology) often leads to the situation, in which obsolete appliances are removed from service without being disposed of and are thus accumulated in households.
The volume of supply of TV sets in Russia was on the rise during the period from 2006 to 2008. It decreased only in 2009. The reason for the decrease lay in the economic crisis, which forced customers to give up buying products that are not essential. In 2010 the volume of supply of TV sets grew by 36.7%.
Import of TV sets has the greatest share in the volume of supply in the Russian market. Between 2006 and 2009, the volume of imported goods amounted to 38.8-60% of the volume of supply. During this period production of TV sets did not exceed 26.6% of the total volume of supply in Russia. In 2010 the ratio of production and import changed in favor of the domestic production. Thus, in 2010 the share of production in the total volume of supply amounted to 39.0% and that of import equaled only 29.3%. According to BusinesStat estimates, the tendency towards prevalence of production over import will persist during the period from 2011 to 2015.
