Volume of energy drink sales in Russia has grown by 40 million litres during the past 5 years, and in 2010 it amounted to 106.4 million litres. According to BusinesStat estimates, sales will continue growing up to reach 162.5 million litres in 2015. The reason for the market growth will be increasing sales in the segment of energy drinks of economy class that has been introduced recently.

The leader of the energy drink market is PepsiCo with the Adrenaline Rush brand. PepsiCo, Red Bull (the brands Red Bull, Bullit) and Coca-Cola (the brands Burn, Powerade) account for about 78% of the Russian energy drink market. The shares of «Happyland» (the Red Devil brand) and Berklee Capital S.A. (the Jaguar brand) account for about 12% and the rest 10% are divided between about 20 companies, half of which is foreign.

The energy drink market was originally formed in Moscow and million cities where big Western brands penetrated. Even today energy drinks are present mostly in million cities which share in the all-Russian sales equals 70%.

The average volume of energy drink consumption per consumer equaled 128 ml per week in 2010. Such a low consumption level is explained by the fact that half of the consumers does not drink energy drinks regularly.

Voluntary Health Insurance Suffered the Greatest Loses During the Crisis

According to BusinesStat estimates, in 2010, revenue of the Russian medical institutions amounted to 469 billion rubles, which exceeded the rate of the previous year by 11 %. The number of rendered health care services increased by 1.4 % and reached 950 million services. The revenue growth was primarily conditioned by the price rise for medical services. In 2006-2010, the average price for medical services increased by 35 % and reached 494 rubles per service. Price boom was caused by appreciation of rent, imported medicines, equipment, and the wage increase.

Voluntary health insurance suffered the greatest loses during the crisis. The volume of voluntary health insurance decreased both in volume and value terms. In 2009, the actual volume of voluntary health insurance went down by 9 %. This decrease had not become dramatic due to the measures assumed by the government of the Russian Federation. The amendments in the Tax Code effective with the first of January, 2009 twice increased the tax free employer contribution rate for voluntary health insurance, i.e. from 3 % to 6% paid by labor compensation fund. In 2010, the number of rendered services in the voluntary health insurance sector went up by 6% and reached 145 million services. In the coming years the sector of voluntary health insurance will have good prospects, increase will equal almost 4-5 % per annum in volume terms.

Medsi has the largest number of the commercial clinics in Russia, 35 of its medical settings are rendering the services to the clients. Medsi purchased a wide clinic chain when acquired MedEkspress. Med CentrServis owning 12 clinics ranks second by the development of corporate clinic chain.

Turnover of the Health Care Market of Moscow Went Up

In 2010, turnover of the health care market of Moscow went up by 12.5% and reached 111.4 billion rubles. Share of Moscow of the total turnover of the commercial market of health care services in Russia accounted for 23.7 %. However, the number of rendered health care services in Moscow went up only by 2.4 %. The revenue growth was assured primarily by the price rise of health care services.

In 2006-2010, the average price for health care services increased by 1.4 times and reached 723.7 rubles per service. The price rise was conditioned by appreciation of rent, imported medicines, equipment, and increase of salaries to the personnel.

By the end of 2010 there were 56.4 thousand of medical institutions, 8.7 thousand out of which were located in Moscow. Most of the medical institutions in Moscow are multifield, i.e. they render services in more than one field.

290 thousand people are employed in the health care industry of Moscow, i.e. 7-8% of the number of medical staff in Russia. In 2006-2010, the medical staffing level in Moscow went up by 20.8 %, primarily, due to the employment of support personnel to the clinics. The average salary of medical staff in Moscow is higher than the average salary in the whole industry. When in 2010 the average annual income of the health worker amounted to 191.4 thousand rubles, in Moscow this rate reached 464.3 thousand rubles. Income of medical staff in Moscow exceeded the average Russian income rate of medical personnel by 2.43 times.

Cost Volume of the Commercial Medicine Market in the Million Cities Is Growing Fast

In 2010, health care market showed the largest turnover in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, i.e. 111.4; 29.3; and 6.8 billion rubles relatively. Cost volumes of the health care markets of the other million cities fluctuated between 4.2 billion rubles and 6.5 billion rubles. Commercial medicine in big cities gains revenue mostly from the patients with income less than 30 thousand rubles. People with the income rate less than 30 thousand rubles are forming the majority of the population in all the million cities.

Cost volume of the commercial medicine market in the million cities is growing fast, on the average by 12 % per annum. The main factor of the increase in the market cost volume is price rise of the medical services. In 2010, the highest prices for medical services were registered in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Novosibirsk, i.e. 724, 617 and 564 rubles per service relatively.

In the end of 2010, there were 56.4 thousand medical settings, one third out of which were located in the cities with the population over one million people. In 2010, the largest number of medical settings was located in Moscow (8,625), Saint Petersburg (3, 106) and Novosibirsk (1,002). Besides, medical settings are highly dissimilar by its primary activity, manpower ration and client number.

According to BusinesStat estmates, in 2011-2015, the number of medical settings in the million cities will slowly go down. Decrease in the number of the operators will be connected with the gradual market consolidation and the enlargement of the hospitals.

Cost Volume of the Canned Fruit and Berry Market in Russia Went Up

In 2006-2010, according to BusinesStat estimates, cost volume of the canned fruit and berry market in Russia went up by 81 %, i.e. from 118.8 billion rubles to 214.5 billion rubles. Growth of the cost volume of the sales of canned fruits and berries outstripped the market growth in volume terms. It was conditioned by rapid increase in prices for canned fruits and berries. In 2006-2010, the average price for 1 kilogram of canned fruits and berries went up by 54 %, i.e. from 132.4 up to 204.1 rubles.

In 2010, the actual volume of sales of canned fruits and berries reached 1050.8 thousand tons. Besides, in 2010 the market capacity of canned fruits and berries amounted to 2.9 million tons. Such a difference between the market capacity and market size is explained by the presence of subsistence economy of canned fruits and berries in Russia. Other words, some canned fruits and berries are produced from fruits and berries, grown in the households and are not distributed. Each year 1.8 million tons of canned fruits and berries are produced in the Russian private households.

Currently the Russian market of canned fruits and berries is formed mostly by domestic produce. In 2010, supply of canned fruits and berries equaled 838.8 thousand tons of the Russian produce and 265.7 thousand tons of the imported produce.

In 2009-2010, production of baby preserves decreased compared to the previous years. In 2009, its production in Russia went down by 4 %, compared to 2008, and in 2010 the production volume of baby preserves dropped by 8 %, compared to 2009. Decrease in production of baby preserves was conditioned by the necessity to lower the in-stock balance volume, congested during the crisis.

In 2006-2010, the sales volume of baby preserved food in Russia increased by 11.6 %, i.e. from 172.4 thousand tons up to 192.3 thousand tons. Baby fruit preserves are in great demand.
Prices for all types of homogenized baby preserves show the annual growth. Baby preserved meat is the most expensive type of preserved food for babies due to the high price for the raw materials. In 2006-2010, price for preserved meat for babies went up by 67 %, i.e. from 292 rubles per kilogram up to 487 rubles per kilogram. Fruit preserves for babies are the cheapest type of preserved food. In 2006-2010, price for baby fruit preserves went up by 54 %, i.e. from 132 rubles per kilogram up to 204 rubles per kilogram.

Demand for Yoghurts Will Be Steadily Growing

In 2006-2008, the Russian yoghurt market was growing steadily. The economic crisis of 2009 slowed down its rates of growth and asserted influence over the purchasing power of the population. In 2010, the volume of yoghurt sales went down by 4.4 % and totaled 737 thousand tons.

In 2011-2015, according to BusinesStat estimates, demand for yoghurt will be steadily growing and by 2015 it will have reached the point of 815 thousand tons. Yoghurt is a relatively cheap and healthy product that is why amid the income recovery the yoghurt market will begin to grow again.

Consumer share of yoghurt of the population size is steadily increasing after both the expendable income growth and the popularization of healthy lifestyle. In 2010, consumer share of yoghurt accounted for 41.5 % of the Russian population size, and by 2015 it will have reached 46 %.

In 2006-2010, the most popular packaging type has remained plastic container. Share of yoghurt packed in plastic containers is steadily growing and by 2015 it will have reached 46 %.

Yield of Fish and Seafood Was Increasing in Russia

According to BusinesStat estimates, during the period from 2006 to 2009 the yield of fish and seafood was increasing in Russia annually. The situation in 2008 was the only exception when the yield decreased by 2.5%, i.e. 85 thousand tons, compared to 2007. In 2009, the yield of fish and seafood amounted to 3.7 million tons, which is 12% more than in 2008. The considerable growth was provided by the record fish catch of salmonids, i.e. 550 thousand tons, which is 271 thousand tons more than in 2008.

The biggest share of the fish yield belongs to the gadidae family, in particular to Alaska pollock. In 2009, was caught 1271 thousand tons of Alaska pollock which is 35.4% of the whole fish catch. 15.3% of the yield fell on the salmonids. The catch of herring amounted to 391 thousand tons or 10.9% of the total volume of yield.

From 2006 to 2008 the sales of fish and seafood go up by 7.5% in Russia. In 2009, the market volume declined by 7% in comparison with 2008 but in 2010 the sales shrank by 11% further and totaled 3.2 million tons. From 2011 the sales volume of fish and seafood will be increasing and it will have amounted to 3.7 million tons by 2015. The wholesale and retail trade turnover is directly connected with the customer demand, which in its turn, is increasing against the backdrop of the growth of yield and switch from the consumption of expensive meat to less expensive and more healthful fish. The growth of demand is explained by the popularization of healthy eating. In the nearest future the sales of chilled fish will increase considerably in the regions where the restaurants of Japanese food are developing dynamically.

Each resident of Russia consumes about 22 kilograms of fish and seafood on average. However an average European eats more than 30 kilograms per year and a Japanese more than 60 kilograms.

Croppage of Fresh Vegetables and Mushrooms in Russia Will Go Up

In 2006-2009, croppage of fresh vegetables and mushrooms in Russia went up by 12 %, i.e. from 40 million tons to 45 million tons. In 2010, croppage of vegetables and mushrooms decreased by 25 %, compared to the previous year, and amounted to 33 million tons. The main reason was the harvest failure.

In 2011-2015, according to BusinesStat estimates, croppage of fresh vegetables and mushrooms in Russia will go up. In 2015, croppage of fresh vegetables and mushrooms will exceed 47 million tons. Croppage rise is connected with increase in overall demand for fresh vegetables and mushrooms on the national and global markets.

In 2006-2010, retail sales of fresh vegetables and mushrooms went up by 5%, i.e. from 16 million tons to 17 million tons. The volumes of retail sales of fresh vegetables and mushrooms were growing annually, compared to the previous years. The only exception was 2009, when the sales volume did not change, compared to 2008. In 2006-2010, potato, borecole and tomatoes accounted for the major share of the retail sales volume of fresh vegetables and mushrooms. In 2006-2010, the share of the retail sales of potato fluctuated between 60 % in 2010 and 69% in 2006. The share of borecole fluctuated between 7 % in 2007 and 8 % in 2010. The share of the retail sales of tomatoes fluctuated between 5 % in 2006 and 8 % in 2010.

Demand for Sauces in Russia Went Up

In 2006-2010, demand for sauces in Russia went up by 13.7 %. The market growth is conditioned by extension of consumer preferences and rising popularity of sauces.

Mayonnaise and sour cream account for the major share of the total sales volume of sauces in Russia. In 2010, cumulative percentage of these two products amounted to 79.3 % in volume terms. Although, mayonnaise and sour cream are main competitors on the market, and can often be substitutable in consumption. Insofar as cost of raw materials in the dairy industry is high, sour cream at retail is more expensive than mayonnaise. This fact conditions both decrease in the sour cream share of the actual volume of sales and increase of the mayonnaise share.

In the segment of salad dressing and ready-made sauces for second courses there is no the sauce with stable market position. It may be connected both with absence of active advertising and with conservatism of the Russian consumers. All-use sauces, such as 1000 ostrovov, Tar-tar or garlic sauce are popular in this segment. Still sauces for spaghetti, chips, dessert sauces do not have a great run, but in future, according to BusinesStat estimates, this categories of ready-made sauces are expected to increase.
