Starch Sales Volume in the CIS Will Go Up
Starch is a polysaccharide of amylase and amylopictin, the monomer of which is alpha glucose. In the food industry starch is used for getting glucose and treacle, in the textile industry for textile processing, in the paper industry as a filler. As a food additive starch is used as a thickening agent in many nutrition products, for jelly, dressing and sauce making.
Starch sales in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) were showing a positive momentum in 2006-2008. During this period the starch sales volume increased and reached 344.6 thousand tons.
In 2009, the sales volume went down by 5.6% and amounted to 325.3 thousand tons. The sales decrease in the CIS was stipulated by the reduction of production volume in the consuming industries during the crisis, particularly, in the cellulose-paper industry. In 2010, the sales volume of starch increased by 3.2% and in physical terms equaled 335.6 thousand tons.
According to our estimates, in the coming years, the starch sales volume will go up, and in a greater degree by means of the demand growth in the food industry companies. By 2015 the sales volume will have reached 384.9 thousand tons.
Starch Sales in Russia Increased
In 2007-2011, starch sales in Russia increased by 1%, i.e. from 204 to 205 thousand tons. The sales reduction compared to the previous years was noticed in 2009 and 2010, and amounted to 3.4 % and 2.4 % relatively. Currently, the largest starch consumer in Russia is the cellulose and paper industry, which purchases more than 60% of all starch, produced in Russia. Food industry uses 15% (the confectionary, baking, brewing, and meat industries). In the coming years the starch market will expand its use in the food industry, and the sales of starch in the cellulose and paper industry will decrease.
